Under the banner of ‘Kenya Rural Blindness Eradication Project’, the Rotary Club of Nairobi has been performing eye operation camps for 25 years and has done more than 15000 free cataract operations. The club, in conjunction with the Ministry of Health, conducted a major eye operation camp in Kisumu at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Referral & Teaching Hospital on 20th June, 2015. Patients were screened at Kericho, Kapsabet, Siaya, Kisumu, Mbita and Kisii, and patients who were outside Kisumu were provided with transport to and from the hospital in order to undergo the cataract operations.
181 free cataract operations were done by a team of ophthalmologists led by Hon. Rotarian Dr. Joshi, including Dr. Calvin, Dr. Chelimo, Dr. Maina, Dr. Onsomu, Dr. Rono, and Dr. Wanjala. Rotary volunteers Neema Dhokia, Peris Muthoni and Roshni Walia assisted with overseeing supplies and disposables required in the operation theatres.
The camp was coordinated by Rotarian Salim Fazal, Community Service Chairman Gideon Akwabi, Rotarian Arun Devani, Ila Devani, Rotarian Hasmukh Rawal and local area MP Hon. Rtn Shakeel, assisted by his active team member Millicent. Rotary President Kamal Sanghani graced the occasion. Rotary Club of Nairobi is grateful to Mr. Jayantibhai Badiani for his assistance. Along with Jayanti Patel and Girish Patel, Mr. Jayantibhai is a board member of the Jalaram Trust and they are trying to establish a local partnership for future such major eye operation camps. The Rotary Club of Nairobi has urged local communities to donate towards these eye camps. The cost of cataract operation is about Ksh.6000. If any local community from Kisumu wants to donate toward this eye camp, please be in touch with Jayanti Badiani, and the rest of the community members from Kenya can be in touch with Rtn. Salim Fazal, firstname.lastname@example.org , or Dr. Mukesh Joshi, email@example.com.
The Rotary Club of Nairobi is very grateful to all the local and international suppliers, like Phillip Pharmaceuticals, Pan Pharmaceuticals and Globe Pharmaceuticals, and partners for their generous donations and support and to Imperial Hotel Kisumu for their assistance with providing accommodation for our team.
